Depending on the type of flooring you have, you can expect it to last anywhere between 10 and 100 years. Regardless, you might be considering installing new flooring, as your current one is either worn down or not your style.

Engineered Wood vs Laminate Flooring Which Should You Choose

You’ve narrowed down your choices to exclude things like carpet and tile. And now, you’ve got 2 on the list: engineered wood vs laminate flooring.

Are you unsure about which to choose? Then read on to find out the pros and cons of both to see which is right for you!

About Engineered Wood

What is engineered wood flooring? It’s a type of flooring that looks like real hardwood.

This is because the top layer is hardwood, while the inside layers are made of high-density fiberboard (HDF) or plywood. These are layered perpendicularly to create a strong structure, and the layers are held together with wax and adhesive.

Pros and Cons of Engineered Wood Flooring

Because engineered wood uses wax and adhesive, this makes it a little more water-resistant than regular hardwood. And because it has real hardwood on top, you get the same look, but at a cheaper price!

You can also buy click-lock engineered wood that makes DIYing easy. This eliminates installation costs from pros.

However, if you have a busy household, engineered wood can get ruined quickly, especially if you have pets. And they can be a little hard to clean.

About Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is also a manmade flooring that consists of several layers. On the top is the wear layer or overlay, then the decorative layer, core board, and the backing or stabilizing layer.

Pros and Cons of Laminate Flooring

Because the decorative layer can be made to look like anything you want, you don’t have to be stuck with “wood” flooring. Laminate can also look like ceramic and stone.

When compared to engineered wood, laminate flooring doesn’t need as much maintenance. So this can be the better choice for busy people. It’s also a bit more durable than engineered wood, which makes it good for households with pets.

Also, laminate flooring is cheaper than engineered wood. But considering that both have low price points, you can’t go wrong with either.

If you want better resale value for your home though, you’re better off with engineered wood.

Both options are water-resistant, so it’s a tie here. Laminate flooring also has interlocking features, so this is another project you can DIY.

Engineered Wood vs Laminate Flooring: Which One’s Right for You?

Now that you know the difference between engineered wood and laminate flooring, you can better choose the flooring that’s right for not just your home, but also your budget.

Both are great types of flooring that are both affordable and durable. It’s up to you to weigh up the benefits and disadvantages and pick one that suits your house and its inhabitants.
