A significant part of updating and renovating your home is increasing your home security. As you invest more time and money into creating the home of your dreams, you want to make sure it’s well protected. Your home should be a sanctuary, a place where you and your family can feel safe whether you’re currently inside or not.

The Future of Your Home Security

Fortunately, home security is evolving every day. In 2019 we have more options than ever before when it comes to ways of protecting our homes, and the future holds even more promise. Let’s look at the new frontier of home security and how it will keep you safe.

Camera Surveillance

The days of hearing a twig snap or a car idle and rushing to peek out your window are over. With outdoor cameras positioned in strategic locations around your home, you’ll never be left wondering what’s going on outside.

And the most modern cameras out there provide so much more than a simple eye in the sky! Many models can distinguish between animal and human prowlers, for a start, meaning your pulse won’t be sent skyrocketing every time a racoon knocks over a trash can or a squirrel streaks through the backyard. Some cameras also play a recording when they detect an intruder so that even if you aren’t home, the intruder might be scared off the premises.

Many modern cameras also connect via an app to your mobile device, so you can keep an eye on the situation no matter where you are. The Manything app even allows you to use old, discarded devices as cameras, positioning them in the rooms you wish to monitor and linking to them with an app on your active device. This is a cost efficient way of creating a home surveillance system out of already-owned items.

Drones

The cutting edge technology when it comes to home security is the same as it is in so many other fields these days—the drone. The solar-powered sensors on home security drones are projected to have the ability to detect movement, sound, or even vibrations on the ground.

Once the drone has perceived a threat, an investigative command can drive it to explore the area of interest, either sussing out an intruder or, hopefully, determining that the source of its warning is benign.

Some drones are prepared to deal more aggressively with intruders than others. Certain models will have the ability to chase after a suspicious person, with the hope of driving them away from your home or perhaps even capturing a photograph.

Others will possess chemical marking technology of the sort that is used in anti-theft devices on clothes in department stores. A chemical tag will make it possible—even easy—for the police to detect and follow the would-be intruder.

The only problem with drone security is that, due to the need to recharge a drone’s battery, it cannot be on watch 24/7. When making choices for the security of your home, this is something you must keep in mind. If you need or want constant eyes on your home, a drone may not be the right choice for you.

Burglar Alarms

A burglar alarm in and of itself is nothing new, although it is an advisable addition to any home security suite. But the new generation of burglar alarms boasts exciting features that will up the ante in any home intrusion.

While older models of burglar alarms merely played loud noises intended to scare the intruder, and more recent models notified the authorities that a break-in was underway, the next generation will be equipped with facial recognition software that could be directly linked to criminal databases.

What does that mean? If your intruder has a prior record, the software will be able to pull their identity from the database and know who they are right away.

From there, there are a few options. Of course, the system will be able to notify the authorities not only that your home is being broken into, but also who is doing the breaking in. In addition, the loud sirens of days past could be replaced with a voice that actually addresses the intruder by name.

Nothing strikes fear into the heart of a criminal like knowing they’ve been identified, and it’s sure to set them running and to guarantee that they’ll leave your home alone ever after.

Door Screening

A lot of home intrusions don’t come in the form of a burglar sneaking in the night or a break and enter when you’re out of the house. Often, the intruder comes right up and rings the doorbell. This is why we have peepholes on our doors—many of us are reluctant to answer unless we know and trust the person on the other side.

However, there are ways for the clever intruder to get around this. Some disguise themselves as postal carriers or other individuals who have business near your home. Then, too, there is the fact that not all doors have peepholes and not all homeowners always take the time to look.

A door screening option is not currently being offered to consumers, but the technology does exist. The idea is that visitors would have to identify themselves, whether by facial recognition software, fingerprinting, or some other method, before gaining entry to your home. Some homeowners may feel this measure is too extreme for their tastes, but for others, it could be the very thing that makes you feel secure.

Door Locks

In the midst of all this digital technology, the most fundamental thing of all is to make sure your door locks are functional. This may not seem futuristic, but the fact is that your deadbolts should be checked for wear and tear and updated on a regular basis.

A locksmith such as NELA Locksmith of Los Angeles can examine your locks for you and let you know if it’s time to replace them. If so, you could be looking at a prime opportunity for an upgrade—a newer, tougher lock design that will do a better job of securing your home. Ask your locksmith what they can provide.

Home security is one of the most important gifts you can give yourself and your family. Make sure your home is protected with any one or more of these powerful options.
