This room needs to be perfect for everyone, from kids and teens to adults and grandparents. But how do you make sure that everyone loves their new family room?

Well, don’t worry! Keep reading for 7 ideas for decorating your family room so that every member of your household will love it! We offer everything from affordable seating options to DIY projects so you can create a space that fits your style and budget.

Why Is Having a Cozy Family Room So Important?

Anyone who has a family can tell you how much work it takes to keep a household running. Between making sure kids get the attention they need and ensuring your spouse feels appreciated, there isn’t always time for much else.

In order to have enough energy left over to enjoy free time with your family, you’ll need to dedicate an entire space of your house just for their entertainment.

A dedicated family room not only makes it easier for everyone in the home to relax together after a hard day at school or work, but it also inspires conversation by creating a place where things can be discussed without distraction or interruption.

For most families, this special area of the house grows organically into a somewhat secluded corner that’s tucked away from other rooms and used only when actively entertaining guests. While this approach has its advantages, it’s far from ideal.

To make your family room an integral part of your home instead of a tolerable inconvenience, make sure you treat it as the living space it was meant to be.

Take a look at these seven ways to bring togetherness and relaxation into this important area of the house:

Furnish with Comfort in Mind

It goes without saying that any items or appliances that are going in the same room where people will spend time relaxing must be friendly to all members of the family. A TV in a cabinet designed not to tip over is a good example, but even seemingly non-threatening furniture like chairs and couches can pose hazards if not chosen with care.

Kids and adults alike need to be able to comfortably sink into furniture after a long day, so make sure everything in the family room is soft and plush.

Also, maple flooring can really help create a cozy atmosphere in your family room and act as an area where people come to relax.

Think about How You’ll Use the Space

Just like any other room in the house, the family room should be tailored to fit the needs of its occupants.

If you’re mostly using it as a place to watch TV or movies, consider adding a small home theater system instead of relying on just the built-in speakers of your television set.

If you’re going to use it for more active pursuits like playing games or working out, make sure there’s plenty of space for people to move around without running into each other.

Include Pieces that Encourage Interaction

One of the main goals of a family room is to provide a space where everyone can come together and chat.

This can be done in a variety of ways, but one of the simplest is to include furniture that’s conducive to conversation.

A circular coffee table is perfect for this, as are chairs with arms that invite people to sit close together.

Make it Bright and Cheerful

A family room should be an inviting place where everyone feels comfortable spending time. This means avoiding dark colors and heavy draperies in favor of light shades and fabrics.

You can still add some personality with accessories and artwork, but it’s important that the overall feeling be one of relaxation.

Consider the Lighting

The right lighting can make your family room more welcoming or less inviting, depending on what effect you’re going for.

If you want sunshine and outdoor views to be an important part of your family room design, invest in some floor-to-ceiling windows that allow plenty of natural light.

You might also consider installing track lighting or recessed lights throughout the room that can be adjusted as needed.

Offer Plenty of Storage Space

Even if you don’t have a lot of items cluttering up your house, there are bound to be times when people come over with bulky coats or bags they don’t want wrinkling up your sofa.

Make sure there are enough closet space and storage areas where guests’ things can be kept out of sight until they leave.

Avoid compromising on seating since providing an adequate number of chairs will go a long way towards keeping the family room looking inviting.

Consider Outfitting it with Technology

An important part of any living space is making sure all the needed technology is in place so everything runs smoothly no matter what people are doing there.

A high-speed Wi-Fi connection combined with enough electrical outlets ensures that everyone’s devices, gaming consoles or DVD players will always be fully charged and ready to use.
