Resorts and hotels must compete for customers just as other businesses do. One way to draw people in is to provide a luxurious space where they can relax. Many places opt to offer this space outside, so guests can get fresh air and enjoy the beauty of their surroundings.

The Importance of Outdoor Elements in Hotel Design

When designing this space, the resort or hotel needs to ensure it combines style with function. When it finds this balance, it will see an increase in revenue. Customers leave positive reviews, and the organization becomes more profitable.

This space needs to be low maintenance and attractive to guests. Keep this in mind when finding hotel furniture to fill the space.

Those organizations that do so find the outdoor space provides benefits far beyond those mentioned above. What other elements should a hotel or resort consider when designing the space?

Bold Colors

Colors leave an impression on a person. They influence a person’s opinion subconsciously, so each hotel and resort must choose its colors carefully. Color is also a way to distinguish the accommodations from competitors.

Many hotels and resorts are moving away from cool colors and toward those which are warmer. Use bold colors to attract attention and stand out in the crowd. Consider dispersing art throughout the outdoor space.

This is an excellent way to bring color in and change the outdoor setting frequently. Ask local artists to display their pieces in the space. The hotel gets ever-changing scenery and the artist gets their works before a new crowd, so everyone wins.

Create an Outdoor Oasis

Guests take a vacation to relax. What better way to do so than in a spa-like setting? Who says this spa has to be indoors? Take advantage of the natural landscape and give guests something to gaze on as they undergo the selected treatments.

Native plants and a waterfall would be a good addition to the space, and some organizations choose to incorporate outdoor showers, so guests can spend more time outside.

Other features a resort or hotel might want to incorporate into the outdoor oasis are massage tables and cabanas. A guest can have a massage and bask in the warmth of the sun or visit a cabana when they get overheated.

Sheer fabric can be used to provide guests with some privacy without completely blocking their view, and the hotel or resort might want to provide them with amenities such as sun loungers and a juice bar.

Every facility can create a different outdoor oasis to make its accommodations unique. Consider the surrounding area and design the oasis so it blends in with the natural elements.

When doing so, ensures it also coordinates with the facility’s interior, so guests don’t get a shock when they travel between the interior and exterior of the resort or hotel.

When guests see the beauty of this area, they want to share it with family and friends. They may share these photos on social media sites, which benefits the business by increasing brand visibility.

Make it easy for them to do so by providing wireless internet access in the outdoor oasis. Guests will appreciate this amenity and make use of it.

Environmentally Friendly Hotels

Many people today hesitate to travel because they worry about the environmental impact of doing so. Allow them to feel comfortable when visiting the resort or hotel by using green design techniques both indoors and out.

Add native plants and trees throughout the outdoor space. Guests like knowing this greenery grow with little work on the part of the hotel or resort staff. Fewer resources will be needed to allow the plants and trees to thrive.

Retractable awnings are another feature hotels and resorts might want to incorporate into the design. They can be retracted on pleasant days to allow guests to benefit from the sun and any breeze.

On days when the temperature is climbing, the awnings can be used to keep the interior of the building cool, so the HVAC system won’t need to work as hard to keep guests comfortable.

Outdoor Dining

Offer guests the opportunity to dine outdoors. Many choose to take a hotel or resort up on this offer, particularly when the setting has many of the other features mentioned in this outdoor space. They can relax, enjoy a meal, and soak up the atmosphere.

The hotel or resort may choose to offer communal dining or they may give guests the option of dining privately outdoors.

This may be done with the help of cabanas, yurts, sheer curtains between tables, or native plants used as barriers to providing separate dining accommodations. A facility can distinguish itself by choosing an outdoor dining option that is unique to its brand.

Bring the Outdoors In

Don’t stop at the exterior elements when improving the facility. Allow nature to come indoors, as this provides a smooth transition from the outside of the building to the interior.

Have native plants scattered throughout the lobby or incorporate more windows into the building to allow guests to see the outdoors when they must come in.

Another way to incorporate outdoor elements into hotel design is to install art with botanical designs throughout the building. Choose decor in earth tones and with natural shapes to accomplish this goal, or use natural fabrics for chair cushions, bedspreads, and more.

Lighting Options

Hotels and resorts want guests to make the most of every moment of their stay. Ensure they can enjoy the outdoors at night by installing lighting that encourages them to explore the grounds after the sun goes down.

Consider the overall feel of the facility when choosing this lighting. A hotel in a city may want bright lights that draw the eye. In contrast, a resort designed for couples should choose subtle lighting with a romantic feel to provide guests with the full experience.

The first thing a guest sees when they visit a hotel or resort is the exterior. Make certain this view demonstrates all the facility has to offer, as a customer forms an opinion of the brand within seconds of seeing the interior. The right design is important for this reason and more.
