Be Aware of People in the Neighbourhood

Before intruders decide to break into a home, they usually case it out to confirm that the residence is accessible, what valuables it has, and if they can get away easily afterwards. Talk to your neighbours about a neighbourhood watch program that will create awareness of suspicious activity or people in the area.

Make sure that the program is advertised through neighbourhood signs and window stickers to deter any intruders from making your region a target.

Light Up the Dark

Having appropriate lighting at your residence is a cheap and effective way to deter intruders from targeting your home. For the exterior, make sure you have lights at every entrance, preferably ones set up to automatically light up every evening.

These draw unwanted attention to intruders who prefer to remain inconspicuous and in the shadows. For the inside of your home, consider putting timers on your lights that activate in the evening. These are especially effective when you are absent from the home or on vacation because it gives the impression that your residence is occupied.

Confirm Windows are Secure

You are always cognizant in making sure your doors are always locked , but what about your windows? These are easy access points for intruders who are determined to get in and a locked door is not stopping them.

Make sure that all your windows are secured and locked at all times. Inspect the locks on the windows on occasion to make sure they are in working order and replace if necessary. Consider putting a piece of wood in the track of the window to make sure the pane cannot be opened even if the lock fails.

Form a habit of checking all doors and windows to make sure they are secure before bedtime and before you leave the home.

Have a Security System

While seen as unnecessary or extreme by many, having an security system is one of the best ways to prevent your home being targeted by burglars.

There are generally two types of alarms. A monitored system means that if your home is accessed when the system is activated, a signal is sent either straight to police or a security company who checks in with the homeowner and if needed then alerts police or sends a security guard to investigate.

A monitored system is more expensive because you need to pay a company to monitor your system. An unmonitored system consists of a variety of sensors that, if set off, activates a bell or siren that alerts the surrounding area of a potential issue at your house.

This can be more economical because you can install a system yourself and a company does not oversee it. Both systems are effective in alerting authorities to threats at your residence and having signage on your residence’s access points confirming the presence of a security system will deter potential thieves.

Have a Dog

In addition to being a loyal companion, dogs are a great way to keep your home safe because they have amazing hearing and are usually very territorial.

Whether you get a little pooch with an annoying shrill howl or a large beast with a deep intimating growl, intruders will be deterred because the noise of a dog draws undesirable attention to them.

You do not have to train your dog to do anything more than what they do naturally: bark at any noises they hear. Usually, barking will be enough to cause the potential burglar to move on.
