A Quick Guide to the Different Types of Door Handles

To make your choice easier, here’s what you need to know about door hardware and how to know which handle to choose to complete the look of your door.

Choosing the right door hardware can seem daunting at first. But by matching it to your front door style and determining the type of handle set you want, you’ll be well on your way.

With a wide range of different types of door handles, here’s everything you need to know.

The Purpose of Your Door Handle

Different door handles serve different purposes, so the first thing you should determine when looking for a door handle is the type you need. Door handles can work in three different ways: as a simple deadbolt, as a latch to keep the door closed, or as a secret lock.

The best type of handle depends on the location and purpose of the door. The door levers are designed for ease of use, eliminating the need to pick up and turn like a handle.

The purpose of your door handle will also determine if you need a handle, a knob, or something in between.

Types of Doorknob

Each doorknob will give your decoration a completely different look, so choosing these features comes down to your personal preference and the overall look you’re looking for.

Similarly, door handles are available in many styles, colors, and finishes, offering the perfect choice for whatever your decorating preference is.

If you are using basic door handles, you may decide to use a common style for all door hardware, or at least choose something that complements. Certain models of knobs and knobs are naturally better suited to different styles of interior design and architecture.

You might want to consider anti ligature door handles to help you along the way.

Bronze or Wrought Iron Doors

Bronze or wrought iron door hardware best embodies rustic or handcrafted style, and a set of modular or integral handles completes the style. Classic front door: classic options are brass or antique brown hardware, and consider full-length door handles.

While there are many similarities to interior door handles and handles, exterior door kits offer stronger construction and more locking systems.

Offered in both handle style and doorknob style, here are common types of outdoor entry kits to choose from.

Essentially, these outdoor entry sets are designed with an inward-facing doorknob or handle and a matching handle on the outside that has both a built-in lock and a separate deadbolt.

Entryway one-piece sets provide a consistent look and feel to your equipment by providing a lockable doorknob or handle located along with with with with the same trim piece.

Curved Door Handles

Door handles are recessed with the surface of the doors so that the doors can move in and out unhindered. They are mounted on the outside of the door and can be curved in a d shape with straight edges or in a t shape with extensions at the ends, in which case they are called t-handles.

Flush or recessed handles are more commonly used on sliding doors. In a glass or on sliding doors.

Other types of handles, commonly used in Europe, slide on a pin but are fixed only on the door itself without the use of mounting screws.

Most home door handles use a simple mechanism with a screw shaft that goes through the door latch, leaving some length open on each side of the door that the handles are attached to.

If this style of handle is being used on a lockable door, simply pair it with the attachments of your choice.

These are plates that can be placed on the door to hide the roughness around the keyhole. This type of door handle offers more options, not only in terms of back panel selection but also in terms of technology, with some door handles that work with a digital lock, such as a union-coded handle digital lock.

Lever Handles

There are some drawbacks to lever handles, including the fact that, due to their shape, baggy clothes tend to get stuck in the handle; and because of the springs holding the lever, these handles can require more maintenance than doorknobs.

For this reason, door handles in most American commercial and industrial buildings and many households are operated by a lever rather than a handle, since the lever does not require a firm grip. This is often a key factor in how people go about choosing door handles.

Door handles naturally provide a better grip, helping people with varying levels of strength and dexterity. It is becoming increasingly popular to use standard cabinet doors with the same lever or handle used throughout the home.

Choosing Different Types of Door Handles

There are many determining factors to consider when choosing different types of door handles. This ranges from whether you want knobs or handles, what style of hardware goes with your door, what finish you should choose, and what rooms you will be installing it in.

Here we take a look at the different styles and designs you can choose from and how to complement any interior design with the right knobs and handles.
