Asphalt Shingles

This is the most common type of roofing material in the United States, and it remains so going into 2019. With time it may decrease as they give way to more energy-efficient options, but that won’t be for a while. Asphalt is currently so popular because it is quite affordable and also comes in a variety of options.

On the one hand, there are the fiberglass shingles, which are made out of asphalt on a fiberglass mesh. They are topped with colored granules that reflect sunlight and provide color to the shingle. They are light and highly resistant to tearing.

On the other hand, there is organic asphalt, which is made out of recycled paper saturated with asphalt and topped with granules for color. These are a lot less common than the fiberglass version because they tend to be less waterproof over time.

Wood Shingles & Shakes

Wood makes any roof look naturally beautiful. Wood shingles are machine cut with smoother surfaces and cleaner edges while wood shakes are hand cut and are more rustic in appearance.

They also tend to be more expensive than wood shingles. Wood shingles offer plenty of natural beauty but are not a good option in fire-prone areas unless they have been treated, in which case they will be costlier.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofing is highly durable and can go for a century or more. It is also environmentally friendly. It comes in many options, including sheet roofing and modular panels.

It can also come in shakes, tiles and shingles, making it a highly versatile roofing material. The most common material is aluminum, but there are also amalgamations of zinc and lightweight steel. The most beautiful are copper roofs, but they also happen to be the costliest.

Roofing Tiles

This is a very old type of roofing that has lately been given something of a modern touch that makes it look even better. There are three types of roofing tiles used on modern roofs: clay tiles, concrete tiles and fiber cement tiles.

Clay tiles are made from reinforced clay to be extra strong and durable. Concrete tiles are made from lightweight concrete blends that are tough but light enough to work with, and fiber cement tiles are made from a blend of clay, wood and concrete.

Solar Tiles

Solar has had the traditional disadvantage of being rather ugly, even though it is highly energy-efficient. That is soon going to change with the amount of effort being put in by Solar City to make solar tiles that look like normal tiles. They’re made of glass and come in a variety of options. The glass is laid out over a photovoltaic substrate and wired to a power wall that connects to the electric system in your house.
