Use these to cut costs and make your house greener, too.

1. Purchase Energy-Efficient Appliances

The best way to lessen your electric bill costs is by having appliances that use 30% less energy. Buying Energy Star appliances is a smart, efficient way to save you money and power.

The average household can spend at least $2000 every year on bills, but Energy Star can cut your bills to about $600.

2. Consider Getting A Zoning System

A great way to start reducing energy costs and increase your comfort is by adding a zoning system.

A zoning system helps you vary the temperature in your home by using thermostats for every area. It will address each area separately instead of cooling your entire house at once.

Installing a zoning system will not be cheap, but it’s worth the investment in the long run. Your heating and cooling bills will go down by about 30%.

Another option is getting a programmable thermostat so you can heat and cool the room at optimal times.

3. Switch Your Light Bulbs

Did you know that your incandescent and halogen bulbs use the highest wattages? Meanwhile, the CFLs and LEDs save up to 25%-80% of energy compared to incandescent and halogen.

CFLs and LEDs can last for about 8 to 10 years while giving the same amount of light that halogen gives.

4. Get A Smart Metering Program

To have a low electric bill, consider getting a smart metering program to help you track the energy you use. It’s a great utility that makes sure the power grid does not cause blackouts and get overloaded.

You can choose from time-of-use to real-time pricing that helps you pay less when you use electricity during a specific time.

Installing a smart meter can cut your electric bill costs by 7% off. Talk with your electric companies, like Gexa Energy, and ask whether they offer smart metering programs.

5. Lower the Water Temperature

Lowering the temperature of your appliances can save at least 10% of your bill every eight hours. Start by adjusting your refrigerator’s temperature since it can save you 30% to 50% of your bills.

Keep your fridge between 35 to 38 F, while your freezer should stay between 0 to 5 F.

Next, check your water heater to see if the temperature is at 140 °F. Lower it to 120 °F to start reducing energy costs by 10%.

If you’re leaving home for a few days, lower your bills even more by putting all your appliances at their lowest setting.
