This article will provide tips on properly caring for your outdoor furniture to guarantee a nice appearance and longevity.

How Do I Clean My Furniture?

Even though you might be very cautious when using your furniture, chances are that you will mess it up at some point. It might be wine spillage on your sectional deck sofa or drops of guacamole on your poolside sun loungers.

On the other hand, mother nature has plenty of messes too. These include birds, trees, wind, sun, rain, or critters, and they can damage or ruin your furniture.

Therefore, you must take preventative measures like regular cleaning. However, plastics, wood, and metals may require to be handled a little differently.

Wood

Usually, most garden seats and tables are made from hardwoods and can be cleaned similarly. Typically, you will be required to follow the following steps;

  • Eliminate small debris, such as leaves, using a soft plastic bristle brush
  • Clean the surface with lukewarm water and a damp cloth or sponge. Add mild household soap to the water while cleaning
  • Soak up any excess water with a lint-free or microfiber cloth
  • Let the wooden furniture dry naturally

If you want to retain your furniture’s natural brown color, you will need to treat it with a sealant or furniture oil or clean it more regularly. Nevertheless, your cleaning frequency varies with whether the furniture is sheltered or the area’s climate.

Metal

Your metallic outdoor seats and tables can bring excellent aesthetics to your garden’s finishing. However, if neglected, they can be a source of embarrassment due to stains and rust. The cleaning process will include the following;

  • Remove any decorative pillows or upholstered cushions
  • Lightly spray the furniture frames to wash away debris and dirt
  • Wipe the surfaces with a soft cloth with household soapy water
  • Rinse the cloth and wipe the surface again with clean water
  • Dry the surface with low abrasion or microfiber cloth

Avoid using alcohol-based cleansers, solvents, or acids to wipe the surfaces, as they may scratch or spoil their surfaces.

Plastics

Usually, plastic is fade-resistant and lightweight, and it can take different styles, textures, and shapes. Again, their maintenance is minimal as they do not require sealants or paint like other materials.

This makes them an inexpensive choice for your outdoor furniture. Nevertheless, its form will significantly depend on caring for and cleaning plastic furniture.

Moreover, sticky drips and spills, such as tree sap, may require commercial cleaning products; but alcohol may sometimes work.

Whether you choose commercial or homemade cleaning solutions, ensure you rinse them immediately after cleaning. Besides, exposure to chemicals can destroy your plastic furniture.
