If you’re sick and tired of the tile that you have in your home currently, you may want to look at removing this tile and replacing it with something new. While you can hire someone to do the tile demolition and replacement for you, this is also something that many people can try to do on their own if they feel confident in their DIY capabilities.

If this sounds like you, here are three tips for removing and reinstalling tile in your home.

Try to Remove Whole Tile Pieces

Before you can put in a new tile, you first have to remove the old tile that you want to get rid of. And while you might like the idea of getting some of your aggression out by busting up all of the tiles, it’s going to be best for you if you’re able to get the tile out in one whole piece.

If the tiles that you’re trying to remove are big enough, you should be able to get underneath one and then pry it up along the edges. This is going to be the cleanest way to go about removing the tiles, as you won’t have a ton of little tiny pieces to have to hunt down and dispose of. By minimizing the clutter in this way, you can make the project much easier on yourself.

Use The Right Tools to Break Tiles

Sometimes, the tiles that you’re trying to remove are too small to try and get up in just one piece. In these situations, or if the bigger pieces of tile that you’re trying to remove simply aren’t coming up on their own, you’re going to need to go about breaking the tiles so that you can get them up.

In most scenarios, the best way to do this is to score the tile with an “X” and then hit that spot with a hammer. As you do this, it should fracture the tiles enough for you to break them apart and get all of the pieces up off of the floor.

Don’t Start Retiling Without a Proper Plan in Place

Once you’ve been able to get all of the tile up and are ready to start putting down the new tile, you’re not going to want to make any moves until you have a solid plan in place for how you’re going to go about doing the tiling. The last thing you want to do is start laying down the tiles only to realize that you’ve overlooked something or done something wrong.

As part of your plan, make sure you think ahead about things like the underlayment, how you want the tiles to be laid out, what grout technique you’re going to use, and which tools you’re going to need to get the job done.

If you have a tile in your home that you’re wanting to remove and reinstall new tile in its place, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you do this.
