The lifetime of clothes now in Australia is becoming increasingly less and even though you find a piece of clothing that you love, and you would like to hold on to forever, the lifetime of a quality garment is only about two years.

This is incredibly bad news for the environment because the vast majority of these discarded clothes end up in Australian landfills and this is not helping to make the environment greener at all.

You can however put some things into place that will allow you to keep your clothes for much longer and help you to reduce your carbon footprint at the same time.

One of the first things that you can purchase is a top quality garment steamer because this can help you to take better care of your favourite clothes items and significantly increase their lifetime.

It is very straightforward and easy to use and is extremely affordable. This is just one of the many tips that you can use to keep your favourite clothes for longer and the following are just some of the others.

1. Wash Your Clothes Less

The more that you wash your favourite clothes, the higher the likelihood is that you’re going to damage the fibres and reduce their life span.

If you’re shirt or blouse is smelling a bit funky rather than putting it into the washing machine to wash it again and again, it would make more sense to hang on outside in the sun to let it breathe.

2. Reduce the Temperature

Just because the label on the clothes space that you should wash the garment at a certain temperature, it doesn’t mean that you have to follow this advice to the letter.

You could wash your clothes at a much lower temperature and just take the time to pick a better laundry detergent that will help to keep the fabrics clean and stop the colour from fading.

3. Cut Back on Your Dry Cleaning

The label might say that you have to dry clean the garment but modern washing machines will allow you to use the delicate cycle and you can wash these particular clothes at a lower temperature.

You need to remember that dry cleaning is incredibly bad for the environment because many chemicals are used in the cleaning process.

4. Pick Eco-friendly Detergents

This is your opportunity to protect the lifetime of your clothes but also to do your bit for the environment.

Rather than chucking the garment into the washing machine for another time, why don’t you just take a little bit of time and do a hand wash by yourself? This is not only better for your clothes, but it is very therapeutic as well.

These are just four ways that you can reduce your carbon footprint and make your favourite clothes last a lot longer.

One more tip is to turn your clothes inside out as this can cut down on the amount of friction that your fibers experience every time you put your favourite clothes in the washing machine.
