The right combination of light fixtures can make a dull part of your home look like it’s straight out of a magazine.

That’s how much good lighting affects your home’s aesthetics. The problem is, only a few know how to use lighting to their advantage.

Need help adding lights to your home? Recalibrating the house’s electrical system to add sockets and bulbs is not always doable.

In such cases, you can always use floor lamps instead. You can even find lamps with table attached for increased functionality.

Best Places to Put Floor Lamp

Adding extra lights to a room can be as easy as placing a floor lamp in a specific spot. If you’re planning to purchase a floor lamp, here’s how you can make good use of it:

Room Corner

The corners of a room are often the darkest parts of your home. They just don’t receive ample illumination, making the room look dull and appear smaller than it is.

The best antidote to this is to use a corner-hugging floor lamp. Doing so will add depth to the room and amplify the space.

That said, it’s important to note that floor lamps should not be the only source of light in the room. Instead, use them only to complement your main light source and improve the room’s atmosphere.

Next to Couches and Chairs

Another popular option is to place a floor lamp next to couches and chairs. Not only does this setup make your seating arrangement welcoming but functional and cozy too.

We often lounge on these spots to read, drink coffee, and do other leisure activities. Having a floor lamp next to them will make it more inviting and convenient to conduct these things.

Additionally, these furniture pieces also make it significantly easier to conceal a floor lamp’s electrical cable. You can run them behind or underneath. Aside from being more visually appealing, doing so will reduce tripping hazards and the risk of accidents.

By the Window

If you have a couch or a chair by the window that receives plenty of sunlight during the day, consider placing a floor lamp next to it. You may think it’s ironic because if it already gets an ample amount of sunlight, what’s the need for a lamp?

In case you don’t know, a place illuminated by natural light in the daytime will be relatively dark at nighttime.

Therefore, placing a floor lamp in the same spot will keep the same light arrangement when it gets dark.

Next to TV

Living rooms with television screens will greatly benefit from floor lamps. When you watch movies at night when the room is dark, the light from the TV screen may cause eye strain. A floor lamp next to it will help soften the bright light coming from the TV, reducing eye fatigue.

However, you want to make sure that you use a floor lamp with directional light. Some floor lamps may reduce the contrast on the TV screen, especially if the scene is in a dark setting. If the light is directed away from the TV, you will still be able to watch properly and comfortably.

Nightstand

Some people can’t sleep without a soft light in the room; others enjoy reading before bed. That’s why we often have nightstands with lamps next to our beds.

If you want to replace your nightstand’s desk lamp, consider getting a floor lamp instead. It can significantly improve the room’s ambiance and make it appear more calming.

On the other hand, you can also look for floor lamps with tables attached to them, so you don’t have to purchase them separately. Plus, it also ensures that your lamp matches your nightstand.

Should Your Floor Lamps Match?

One question homeowner frequently asks themselves when designing their house’s interior is whether or not the floor lamps should match. There’s not a quick and simple answer to this.

If you’re using two-floor lamps on either side of a piece of furniture or fixture, like a fireplace, matching floor lamps are a must. Using different floor lamps for this purpose will distort the balance of your interior design.

On the other hand, different rooms or a single room with an open floor plan doesn’t necessarily need matching floor lamps. However, you want to stick to a single theme to ensure that the room doesn’t look scattered.

Where You Decide to Put it Matters

A floor lamp is one of the best light fixtures you can use to accentuate and decorate your home.

However, its potential lies not in the brightness of its light but in your placement skills. Make sure that you know the best places to put your floor lamp for a more welcoming and visually appealing home.
