Are you about to welcome a new member to your family? Are you trying to find space for setting up a guest room? Do you want a gaming room or cocktail bar all for yourself? You don’t have to think about moving to a new house. You can have at all as long as you have space in your basement.

The right basement finishing company can transform the unused area into a luxury apartment in a matter of days. You can get a couple of new rooms, a bathroom and even a storage space to stow away the household clutter within a tight budget.

The cost of finishing and furnishing a basement depends on a number of factors including the current state of maintenance, the space available, existing fixtures, insulation, plumbing, and wiring.

The Expenses of Remodels Vary Significantly

The finishing process adds walls, floors, usable bathroom fixtures, electricity and insulation to the basement. If your basement is around 1200 square foot (the standard size for houses across the state), you can expect the flooring and wall coverings to comprise approximately 15% of the net expense.

The electricity and plumbing processes contribute to the next 14% or so. The remaining 50% of the cost accounts for insulation, drywall, painting, countertops, and cabinets. The total cost should include the clean-up process. In fact, you should exclusively look at basement finishing teams that offer complimentary clean-up after each job.

Always Work With a Strict Budget in Mind

Once you start looking at finished basement remodels, it is easy to let the photos carry you away from a realistic budget. It is imperative for every homeowner to set a working budget for the renovation process.

According to experts, people often end up spending close to 20% of their home’s fair market value on the remodeling, but you should be careful enough to recuperate the costs when you intend to sell your home.

Financially, it makes little sense to spend more than 20% of the home’s value for a remodel unless the owner is sure about living there for at least the next five years.

Your Basement Remodel Should be an Investment

You should always view the cost of the renovation as an investment. Unless the remodeling contributes to your home’s resale value 5 to 10 years down the line, you should reconsider your renovation priorities and budget.

The return on investment (ROI) should drive your basement finishing project. A finished basement can become a fully-furnished apartment with a functioning bathroom and kitchen. Recent real estate surveys show that any finished basement with living space, bath, kitchen, and a bar can recoup close to 70% of the cost during resale.

For enjoying the highest ROI, you need to hire the right professionals for the renovation process. Always check for their reputation and experience before signing a deal.

Ask for customer referrals and look for recommendations from your friends and family to land the best basement finishing deals. Before beginning the work, check with your state consumer protection agency for verifying the licenses, and insurance of the potential contractors.
