In recent years, the rustic decor has seen a serious surge in popularity. If this is something you’re thinking about for your home, then you’re probably trying to find rustic home ideas and inspiration. This article aims to help you do just that.

Learn a little bit about what constitutes rustic decor, where it came from, and how you can incorporate it into your home in an effortless and stylish way. Read on for your fill of country rustic home ideas now.

What Exactly is Rustic Decor?

Before we look at some rustic home ideas decor, let’s first try to understand what rustic means in this context. The word rustic, of course, conjures up images of the countryside. Its main characteristics are being rural, plain, and down-to-earth.

Rustic style elements are inspired by the lifestyle of homesteaders in early nineteenth-century America. Their homes were simple and warm, inviting spaces.

What does this mean from a design perspective? In interior design, pieces and rooms that are rustic are typically neutral or light in color. It often incorporates earthy and natural materials such as wood.

At its core, rustic decor is pretty yet unpretentious. It’s a design style that can also be mixed nicely with other design styles with wonderful results. It incorporates many different elements, making it easy to add rustic touches to your home.

1. Mix Materials and Textures

The rustic style shouldn’t look too thought out or put together. Because of this, you don’t need to have soft furnishings and furniture be matchy-matchy in any way. Instead, a contrast can actually be preferable and add to the effect.

Think about adding earthy textures such as burlap, sheepskin, wool, and wood. These will add a rustic touch and some visual interest to your room. Just be sure not to add too many patterns or colors, or you could be veering away from the rustic territory into something else entirely.

2. Try Your Hand at DIY

When it comes to rustic elements, many of them already look handmade. In fact, they’re not supposed to look too uniform or perfect. This makes it the perfect design style to try out some DIY rustic home ideas.

If you’re not a natural handyman, don’t worry. There are plenty of things you can try, with varying levels of experience required.

If you have an outdoor space, using DIY mason jar lights there can add a touch of warmth and coziness to the space. You can also try creating a super simple coffee table from an old crate, and create custom signs for your pantry area. There’s no limit to the things you can create.

3. The Kitchen Is Key

In many homes, the kitchen is the heart of the home. But when it comes to a rustic-style home, this sentiment is especially true. The kitchen is one room, in particular, that takes to rustic decor well, and there are so many beautiful rustic kitchen ideas.

One big trend in rustic kitchens is the concept of open shelving. Having big, beautiful, wooden shelves along your kitchen wall allows you to display all of your rustic plates, pans, and, of course, foods. Store your pantry items in big glass jars for added effect.

Most of all, you want to cultivate a warm and cozy feeling in your rustic kitchen. This can be done through the use of lighter colors, wooden cabinetry, and creating large, open inviting spaces.

4. Add in Features of Focus

If you really want to add some rustic charm to your home, it can be a good idea to pick a few feature pieces to dot around. Since these will be eye-catching, it’s best not to have more than one per room, otherwise, it can seem too cluttered or curated.

This could be something like a large wooden rocking chair in the bedroom, a wagon wheel on the wall in the hallway, or a set of saloon doors connecting your pantry to your kitchen. Have fun when choosing these elements, and get creative with where you add these design touches. The more whimsical the better.

5. Keep Things Light and Bright

As we’ve mentioned above, there’s a certain color palette that rustic design tends to stay within. This isn’t something you have to follow religiously, but it can be good as a reference point or rule of thumb.

So, what are some of the colors to stick to? A typical rustic color palette will incorporate tones of beige, taupe, brown, and charcoal gray. White and cream usually feature heavily as wall colors.

6. Make It Warm and Cozy

Two words that usually accompany the term “rustic” are warm and cozy. This is more a feeling than a design style, and it can be something that’s difficult to imbue into a home. There are some ways you can add coziness to your space, however.

Low lighting can create a warm ambiance. You can use lower wattage bulbs, light candles in the evening, and opt for lamps rather than ceiling lights.

A roaring fire is another great way to add instant coziness to a home. If your house has a fireplace, try to make it a focal point in your room.
