6 Essential Spring Home Maintenance Tasks

This change in seasons often brings with it the motivation to get things done, starting with your home maintenance to-do list.

Here are six essential spring home maintenance tasks to tackle before the summer.

Schedule an Air Conditioner Tune-Up

One of the most crucial spring home maintenance tasks is to look over your air conditioning unit and schedule a tune-up.

Planning this critical preventative maintenance task is essential to avoid any nasty surprises on the first hot day of the year. Additionally, booking a tune-up in the early spring will help you get ahead of the seasonal rush.

When scheduling an AC tune-up in Frisco, you’ll get a thermostat inspection and adjustment, a condenser cleaning, flushed drain lines, and tightened connections.

The service provider typically cleans and replaces filters as needed and runs several other tests to ensure your air conditioner is running efficiently before the summer months. AC tune-ups usually pay for themselves over the season by reducing associated power bill costs by 15%.

Inspect Your Roof and Gutters

Another essential spring home maintenance task is inspecting your roof and gutters. After the fall and winter, it’s not uncommon to be missing a few shingles or to have an accumulation of debris leaves, branches, etc. in the gutters.

Clearing out the gutters is a relatively simple task that can help prevent leaks and flooding in your roof.

Rather than climbing on your roof, consider hiring a roofing contractor to do the inspection and repairs for you. It’s also important to inspect the chimney and flashing and to look in the attic to see any signs of water damage or mold growth.

Making a few simple repairs each spring can help dramatically extend your roof’s lifespan, minimizing your long-term home maintenance costs.

Inspect the Basement and Foundation

Whether you live in a place prone to excess snow and ice or a warmer climate with lots of winter rain, it’s important to inspect your basement and foundation.

Look around the foundation outside to find any signs of leaks or potential pest invasions. Then, inspect the basement for signs of moisture.

If you notice any cracks, it’s essential to have them repaired and sealed as soon as possible. Failure to do so could increase your risk of flooding and eventually lead to costly structural damage, negatively impacting the resale value of your home.

Clean Windows and Screens

One of the best feelings in the early spring is opening your windows and letting the fresh air flow in. Now is the ideal time to clean all of your windows and screens, repairing any holes as needed to prevent pests from entering your home.

Take some time to check the caulking and weather stripping around your windows, making a note of any excess condensation during the winter months.

If you notice a lot of condensation, your window seals might be damaged. Conversely, you could have an issue with your HVAC system that should be addressed.

Prepare Your Garden and Yard

Whether you’re an avid gardener or just engage in landscaping to maintain your curb appeal, the season of yard work is fast approaching.

Take a stroll through your yard and determine what simple maintenance tasks need to be completed. Get out your tools and see if they need any basic maintenance cleaning, oiling, etc.

Look around your walkways and see if any new cracks must be repaired. Turn on the outside taps and make sure they’re running ok after the winter months.

You might want to put together a more specific yard maintenance to-do list according to your unique landscaping needs.

Inspect Your Pool and Systems

If you’re lucky enough to have a pool, don’t forget to do an inspection early in the spring so you can make repairs before the summer.

Check out the lining for signs of tears and leaks. Then, inspect the filters, pumps, seals, etc., to ensure everything is running efficiently.

With these simple home maintenance tips, you can make the most out of your spring to-do list and enjoy the brighter days ahead.
