  1. Rot or Deterioration

Perhaps the most obvious sign you need a new outdoor deck is if the old one is rotting. Wood rot is a type of decay that occurs through exposure to moisture and fungal growth. This will lead to weak wood that will deteriorate over time.

Horizontal decking boards are not 100% waterproof. Even treated boards can hold water over time as they’re water-resistant, not waterproof.

Look for black coloring, crumbling pieces, moisture rings, and soft spots in the wood.

  1. Visible Warping

If you notice your deck boards twisting or curving, you’re going to run into problems eventually. The sun, excess moisture, and missing joist hangers can cause warping.

When the boards start to warp, it can pull out the fasteners that connect it to the joists. This leads to loose boards that can fall out or peel up. It can also cause nails to lift up out of the boards, creating a safety hazard.

  1. Wobbly Railings

The railing is an integral part of any deck design. If yours are wobbly or unsteady, you should consider replacing them.

Old or broken railings are a severe safety risk. This is especially true if your deck is on the second level of your home or several feet off the ground. A deck builder can assist you in creating a secure and attractive railing to keep you and your family safe.

  1. Insect Infestations

There are several types of wood-destroying pests that will feast upon any wood around your home. Keep your eyes peeled for any signs of the following pests:

  • Carpenter ants
  • Carpenter bees
  • Termites
  • Bark beetles
  • Wood borers

These insects are the most notorious for gnawing at wood materials. If you’re dealing with an infestation, you should call in the professionals to help.

If you decide to redo your deck, you have options for insect-resistant deck material. Pressure-treated pine, cedar, mahogany, and composites are all great choices to consider.

  1. Exposed Nails or Screws

If you’re noticing a lot of exposed nails, it may be time to replace your deck. If your deck boards aren’t staying fastened to the joists, it’s a sign the wood needs to be replaced.

Nails that are sticking out can pose a significant safety hazard. Can you imagine the pain of falling hand-first onto an exposed nail?

Start Your New Deck Today

Giving any part of your home a facelift is exciting. You’ll not only spiffy up your space, but make it safer and more aesthetic, too. A new deck may be just what you need to breathe new life into your outdoor living area.
