Do you want to lie down on soft grass in the summertime and stare up at the sky? Do you dream of a trimmed, fragrant green lawn? Do you want a lawn that stays weed-free by itself?

Growing a green, weed-free lawn isn’t as impossible as it sounds. If you do the right weeding, mowing, and watering, you’ll keep your lawn in good shape.

Read on for basic tips on how to get the perfect lawn.

Weed

If you have a lawn, you probably have weeds.

For small patches of weeds, you should be able to simply dig them out. Make sure to pull up the roots so that the weeds don’t grow back.

If you have bigger patches of weeds, you can kill the weeds with an herbicide. Check the type of weeds, because various types require different types of herbicides.

Spread a crab-grass preventer between mowings in the early spring to keep crabgrass from springing up.

If the lawn remains infested with weeds even after you pull weeds and apply herbicide, you may also have problems with the soil or the nutrient balance.

Talk with experts like those at the Green Path Landscape Company to get help regenerating your soil and building the perfect lawn.

Doing weed maintenance in the spring can help you keep the lawn weed-free all summer. Weeding in the fall will help you maintain your lawn throughout the winter.

Mow

You might decide to save time by letting the grass grow extra-high, then mowing short every few weeks. But that’s about the worst thing you can do to a lawn.

Not only can over-mowing make the lawn more vulnerable to weeds, but it also damages the grass.

Every time you let the grass grow long, then cut it short, the grass can get sunburned, as the parts of the plant that have been in the shade suddenly are exposed to the sun.

The same happens if you grow the lawn to a normal length, but then cut it extra short. Cutting extra-long grass also shocks the roots.

Mow the lawn when it’s about one-third higher than the ideal height, and cut no more than one-third each time you mow. After you mow, leave the clippings on the lawn to return nutrients to the soil.

Water

Water the lawn deeply with several days between each session, since daily watering can cause weed growth and disease. Following a schedule that keeps the grass thick and healthy will prevent weed growth.

To water the lawn, run the sprinklers for 15 to 20 minutes in each area. If the soil’s not wet 4 to 6 inches down, repeat the process in thirty minutes to make sure the water reaches the roots.

To water with more precision, you may want to buy a soil moisture sensor. Some of these sensors can communicate with your smartphone.

Others will automatically trigger your sprinkler system when the soil needs water.

Enjoy the Perfect Lawn

Getting back to basics will help you produce the perfect lawn. Weed, mow, and water regularly, and you’ll keep your lawn growing green and weed-free.

When you take care of your lawn, you’ll be able to enjoy it all year long.
