When you’re crafty, handy, and smart, the title of “interior designer” sounds fitting if you ask me. The ability to take a room that has no character or personality, and turns it into a room that’s warm and inviting is a true talent. Being able to do that without having to hire someone is even better.

The living room is a common area where everybody comes to watch TV, relax, and socialize amongst family and friends, right? Yes for the most part, but what if you could turn your living room into a conversational piece itself!

Never Underestimate the Power of Paint

Paint is affordable and can transform your living room in several different ways. Paint is wonderful for reviving your walls and spray paint work wonders for revamping your home accessories.

Let’s say you have a lamp that your grandmother gave you as a housewarming gift…you love your grandmother dearly, but that lamp is a floral nightmare. The actual lamp’s design and shape are gorgeous, but the floral design on it is hideous.

All you have to do is spray paint it with a color that matches your living room design, and it will make that lamp look like it came from a high-end boutique! A good tip to remember when setting the tone is, the deeper the color, the warmer the welcome.

Transform Your Flat Screen TV

Aside from the couch and remote control, your television is the most important component in the living room. It provides information as to what’s going on around the world, as well as being a source of entertainment.

With the TV being such an important aspect of the living room, it also shouldn’t be an eyesore either. This particular DIY trick is for wall mounted televisions.

Get the dimensions of your television, go to your local thrift stores and find a picture frame that either matches your TV dimensions (or they can be bigger than the dimensions), then place the frame over your TV. It adds the right amount of class to your television.

If you’re a techie and own a firestick, you can take your TV streaming experience even further by removing the restrictions associated with your streaming service.

Remember the Rug

Rugs are an important design tool. Whether you have carpet or not, rugs give your living room personality.

Typically, it’s best for larger rugs to be in the center of the room. It’s not unusual to see a couch sitting on top of a large rug and a coffee table sitting centered on the rug in front of the couch…that’s how most living rooms are set up.

To really give your living room some personality, try adding a patterned rug. You can go to flea markets and thrift stores to find lots of different types of rugs. Rugs found at flea markets and thrift stores usually have prints and patterns with stories to tell!

Focus On a Focal Point

A focal point is an area of your living room where when you walk in, your eyes are immediately drawn to that area. Focal points can be accent walls, a fireplace, and mantel, or a massive piece of artwork.

You may want to showcase your family. Picking an empty wall and decorating it with black and white pictures in different sized frames is definitely a conversational piece. Whenever you have guests visit, they will immediately head to that wall to see the pictures displayed and the stories it tells.

Simple as That

It really is as simple as that. A splash of paint here and there, alone, can not only transform a room aesthetically, but it can also change the mood and feel of a room. Also be sure to do these DIY projects when you’re in a good mood, and have the time to do it…remember, you get out of it what you put into it.
