How to Organize Christmas Decorations

If you love Christmas, it’s crucial that you learn how to organize Christmas decorations. Otherwise, things that you love will get damaged and lost, and – even worse – the area in which you store them will overflow into the rest of your house throughout the rest of the year.

With the following tips, you’ll be able to get organized in no time and your decorations will be easy to find and use without much effort next time the Christmas season rolls around. Read on.

How to Organize Christmas Decorations

You are not the only one with far too many Christmas decorations. According to the National Retail Federation, the average American consumer will spend just over $215 per person on decorations each year. This amount has held steady over the past few years. In time, it may decrease, but the likelihood that it will decrease at all is slim.

Over the years, all of us end up accumulating a wide variety and vast amount of Christmas decorations. Even though we don’t always display all of them each holiday season, have a hard time getting rid of any of them, and in time, they begin to take over our storage areas.

Many of us have Christmas stuff hidden everywhere in our homes. We come across it in the dead of summer, but then we can’t find some of our favorite items when it comes time to decorate when the Christmas season rolls around again.

When the time does come, at most, we put the decorations we do use on display for a month. Some people display their Christmas decorations for an even shorter time.

After that, it’s time to put them away until we pull them all out again next year. In the meantime, our Christmas decorations must be stored somewhere, and it’s best for our own sanity that we organize them as efficiently as possible.

Purchase Decoration Specific Storage Products

One way to achieve the ultimate Christmas decoration organization is to buy storage solutions designed specifically for this purpose. Some of these are overpriced but if you take the time to look you can find cheaper alternatives or even create something similar on your own.

Storage containers for ornaments are necessary. In order to keep your ornaments safe and clean while they are stored, you will need a container with dividers. You can sometimes double-up and put two ornaments in each space, but any more than that is not recommended.

As for trees and wreaths, there are many soft or hard-sided solutions available to you. Both come with positives and negatives, but either one will allow you to zip, snap, or latch these large and odd-shaped decorations into containers where they will be much safer than they would be in a regular box.

You’ll be glad you stored these items this way. When the Christmas season begins again, your artificial greenery will be lush instead of crushed.

Put Lights Away Properly

There are several ways to properly store your Christmas lights, and shoving them into a bag isn’t one of them. Although it may be tempting to just bunch them up, tie them off, and toss them into a box, you will regret it later.

Instead, consider wrapping them around a piece of cardboard. This will keep them from getting tangled and you can store several of these cardboard pieces in boxes together. Don’t forget to label the box.

Sealable Plastic Tubs

Sealable plastic tubs are your best friend and closest ally when it comes to learning how to organize Christmas decorations. For the most effective organization, it may help to buy many tubs of the same size. This will make them stackable.

If you write what each tub holds on the top, side, and end, you will be able to know what is in each one with a simple glance – even if it is at the bottom of the pile.

For those with an especially vast number of Christmas decorations, you can install special shelving in your garage or basement. You can organize them further by category there.

Don’t Cut Corners with Fragile Items

After the holiday season is over, most of us just want to put stuff away as quickly as possible and to get it out of our site for the next eleven or twelve months. However, you will be mad at yourself if you rush the process when it comes to your most fragile decorations.

Take the time, have the patience, and expend the necessary energy to give these beautiful, breakable things the respect they deserve. Use newspaper or bubble wrap to protect these delicate items, and mark their storage box as fragile. You won’t remember where you put them this time next year, so marking the box will remind you to carry it with care and not to stack other things on top of it.

Keep Gift Wrap Organized and Accessible

You may need to wrap gifts before or after you have pulled out your entire decorations collection, so keep it accessible. There are many wrapping paper storage solutions for sale around the holidays, but you can also make one of your own using materials you may already have around the house.

Get Rid of What You Don’t Use

If you find that you are storing a lot of Christmas decorations that you don’t even use, it’s time to let them go. There is no reason to let outdated items take up valuable space in your home.

If there are more items to dispose of than you can drag to the curb yourself, consider calling a junk removal company to give you a hand. You’ll feel so much better once this extra stuff is gone.

Happy Organizing

These tips should help you to learn how to organize Christmas decorations. Keeping things organized and safe during the offseason will make your life a lot easier and a lot less stressful.

Christmastime is supposed to be a time of joy and beauty that we spend with our families; it should not be a time of stress and overwhelm. When you organize your Christmas decorations, you will have more time for the things that are most important. Happy holidays!
