  1. Set a Regular Lawn Mowing Schedule

Having a regular schedule to get your lawn will keep it look nice throughout the year. During the summer, you should mow it every week, but during spring, fall, and warm enough winters, you only need to mow once every two weeks.

During the summer, you need to leave the lawn a little longer to keep it from going brown if the weather gets too dry.

Make sure your lawn mower blades are sharp and well maintained for the best cutting. Another thing to note is that you shouldn’t mow in the same exact pattern each time since you might create ruts and compact the soil.

  1. Prune Trees

Don’t let your trees get out of control. If your tree limbs start reaching out and looking wild, it might be time to prune them. Pruning your trees is good for them, so you don’t need to feel bad about it.

Depending on the type of tree you have, there may be different things you need to do for it. For instance, you’d go about pruning an Elm tree differently than you would other trees that are different.

  1. Give Your Lawn the Water It Needs

Keep your lawn watered, but don’t overdo it. Your lawn needs around 1 to 1 1/2 inches of water each week. Yes—even in the winter.

Water the grass early in the day if it’s possible. You can check to see how the watering is going by pushing a screwdriver in the ground. If it can’t go in your lawn six inches, then you need to water your lawn more.

  1. Get the Weeds Out of Your Lawn

If you have weeds in your yard, they will keep your lawn from growing properly. They can smother your lawn and keep you from having the fresh-looking yard you’ve always wanted.

Grab a trowel and get to work rooting them out of your yard. It will be worth the effort when you can look out and see your pristine lawn. You can use weedkillers, but they aren’t the best way to take care of the problem and are often ineffective.

  1. Use Grass Clippings to Nourish Your Lawn

Grass clippings can help nourish and mulch your yard. It stops weeds from growing and allows grass to keep the moisture in for longer. You only need a small layer on your grass, so don’t overdo it.

When you leave too many grass clippings on your yard, you won’t nourish your lawn. What you will do is allow the clippings to stay there and mold.

Use any extra grass clippings you have to help your garden soil.

  1. Aerate Your Lawn

If your soil is compacted, your grass will have a hard time growing. You may start to notice there are bare patches in your lawn that you can’t seem to make go away.

You can help your lawn by aerating it with a pitchfork. It’s really easy to do because you can poke some holes, rock the fork a little and allow the prongs to make way for the roots to breathe.

Doing this will also encourage any new seeds that you’ve planted to grow.

  1. Seed Your Bare Patches

If you notice that there are bare patches in your lawn, you can help those areas by planting new seeds. Before you plant new seeds, you want to take up the dead turf and put some topsoil on the bare spot so it levels with the grass around it.

Once you have your topsoil in place, you can put seeds on it and mix them in with a rake. After doing that, you can keep moisture in by putting straw on top of the area you put seeds in.

  1. Edge Your Lawn

Edging the lawn is the ultimate way to make your lawn look beautiful and neatly kept. You can use long-handled shears to edge your lawn. When you do this, not only will your lawn look amazing, but it will keep grass from growing over paths and other areas you don’t want it on.

If you notice your lawn has grown into the border, you can take a space or an edger to reshape it. You’ll create a moat-like area between the grass and the area you don’t want the grass.

Once you get the lawn edged, it won’t be as difficult to keep up.

  1. Consider Hiring a Pro

Unless you have all the tools necessary to take care of your lawn, it can get a little pricey to buy everything. On the other hand, you could hire someone to take care of your lawn instead of having to do it yourself and buy equipment.

This is by far the tip that makes life the easiest, but some people enjoy doing their own yard work.

Staying on Top of Yard Maintenance

The above tips will help you as you’re working to up your yard maintenance game. Being able to take care of your yard has many benefits, and now you’ll be able to tap into them all.
