Does your home need a makeover but you don’t know where to start?

Whether you’re redoing the decor of one room or the whole house, doing it on your own can be overwhelming. Outsourcing it to an interior designer can make your life a lot easier.

With a professional in charge, you know they’ll bring a level of taste and style that could be hard for you to execute on your own. Of course, that type of experience comes at a price.

If you can find it in your budget to hire someone, it’s well worth the money.

How Rates are Determined

When interior designers are determining their rates, they take a few things into consideration.

First, what is their experience level? Someone who has been in the industry for a long time can charge more than someone who’s just getting started.

Another aspect of their pricing comes from their location. An experienced, sought after designer in New York City will likely charge more than one in a small town in the midwest.

Hourly Rate

Charging an hourly rate is very common for residential interior designers. They will bill you for the time they put into the project. Additionally, they will charge you for all the materials they used like furniture, paint, curtains, etc.

Generally, an hourly rate will range between $50-$100 an hour.

Flat Rate

Another charging option is a flat rate. The amount depends on the size of the project.

On the low end, one room can start at about $1,000. More likely, it will cost closer to $3,000. The flat rate to redecorate an entire home can be tens of thousands of dollars or even six figures.

Square Footage Rates

Charging by square footage is a practice that’s gaining popularity among designers. Luckily, it’s a pay structure that really benefits the client because it’s more transparent.

When designers charge you an hourly rate, you often don’t know where your money is being spent. They may consider scouring the internet for the perfect bed frame to be viable billable hours. But you can’t really know how long it took them to do that because you aren’t there.

With this pay structure, it’s a fixed price based on the size of the room. The rate can be anywhere from $2-$10 per square feet.

One thing to keep in mind is that a professional designer will likely charge some additional fees on top of the square footage. For example, they might charge you an added $1,000 or more to actually execute the design in your home.
