Focus on the Necessities

Before you begin to plan out how you’ll build your shed, the first way you’ll save money is by focusing on the necessities. Think about what features you need your shed to offer and which ones you don’t. Sheds can offer you just about anything you can think of.

This is when you’ll need to start thinking about what you’ll be using your shed for. For example, some people build sheds to use as work areas. This could be an art studio, a clothing cottage, a work station for building other items, and more.

Some of these designs require electricity, but others do not. Some common features for sheds might be electricity, built-in shelves, a ramp, a workbench, decorative trim, a loft, or larger square footage. These are all amazing features, but not necessary ones.

Which features will you need? Stick with the features that are needed and not wanted, and you’ll save money. Reviewing pages like this article is a great way to come up with some ideas for what kind of shed you want to build.

Choose Materials Wisely

Your next step is to choose your materials wisely. Some building materials are more expensive than others. To save on money while building your shed, you’ll need to go with the less expensive options.

However, you still want your shed to be sturdy and well-built. Wood is one option that you have, which is cheaper than using vinyl. Wood is still a bit more costly at times when purchasing from a store.

If you have a way to stock up on recycled wood, then this is a great way to save on cost while using an aesthetically pleasing material. Lumber mills are one great example of places to be on the lookout for unwanted wood. Consider asking the manager on-site if there’s any scrap wood that is not needed.

There’s a good chance that they’ll be happy to give it to you and get it off their hands. You can also do a reach online for unwanted scrap wood pieces that’ll be perfect for building your shed.

If not, the best material to use for building your shed is metal. Metal won’t be as protective against heavy winds and snowfall, but it works well as a cost-effective material.

Its benefits, other than being cheap, are that it’s low-maintenance, and is insect and rot repellant.

Rent Your Power Tools

You will need a few power tools to help you put your new shed together. Power tools can get quite costly when purchasing them from the store. The first thing you should do is check around your home to find any tools that you might already have.

Some needed tools are as follows:

  • safety glasses and ear protection,
  • a hammer,
  • a tape measure,
  • a cordless power drill and drill bits,
  • a circular saw,
  • a step ladder,
  • a nail gun, and more.

This list is some of the basics. Keep in mind that depending on the type of shed you’re building, you might need some other tools. If you own any of these tools, then you’re in luck.

For the tools that you don’t already have, consider renting them from your local hardware store. Renting them is much cheaper than purchasing them.

Get Permits

One of the most important things to do before prepping to build your shed is to get permits. It would be a huge disappointment to spend time and money building a shed only to be hit with fines or notices that you need to remove it.

The best way to avoid this altogether is to do your research before beginning the process. You can check with local building codes to see what is and isn’t allowed. Just because you’re building on your own property, doesn’t mean you don’t have to follow the codes.

If something isn’t done properly, rest assured that the city will come out and address the situation with you. These codes vary depending on where you live, so you’ll need to research them for your specific location.
